Traditional Sailing Boats
Education
Getting everyone captivated and passionate about sailing and historic boats
Through education, we ensure these boats remain alive and relevant.
History Matters
Traditional boats are more than beautiful objects—they are vessels of memory. They tell the story of how communities survived, traded, and thrived. They reveal the ingenuity of local boatbuilders. They remind us of the deep relationship between Cornwall and the sea.
South West Cornwall has a maritime history unlike any other. Its boats, harbours, and coastal communities shaped trade, fishing, and culture for centuries.
The Cornish Maritime Trust is dedicated to helping people understand not only what these boats are, but why they matter.
Educating the next generation
Sharing History
The Trust works closely with local organisations, and coastal communities to share the history and significance of traditional boats.
Our outreach includes:
- Talks, demonstrations, and open‑boat days
- Collaborations with museums and heritage groups
- Educational resources for teachers and community leaders
- Opportunities for people of all ages to sail and volunteer
By connecting people with their maritime heritage, we help build pride, understanding, and a sense of belonging rooted in Cornwall’s coastal identity.

Hands‑On Learning for New Sailors
We welcome people of all ages and experience levels to step aboard and learn. Our sailing sessions are designed to be immersive, practical, and deeply connected to the traditions of the region.
Participants learn:
- The origins and purpose of each vessel
- How traditional rigs differ from modern yachts
- The working roles of crew aboard historic boats
- The seamanship techniques used by Cornish sailors for generations
This is not just classroom learning—it’s real sailing, real skills, and real heritage.
