Newlyn Old Quay

Revitalising a Historic Home for Traditional Boats

Newlyn’s Old Quay is one of the oldest working harbour structures in the UK, a Grade II* listed medieval quay that has served Cornish fishing communities for more than 700 years. After decades of erosion and disrepair, a major restoration project—supported by Historic England—is now nearing completion.

For the Cornish Maritime Trust, this restoration is deeply personal. Two of our historic vessels, Barnabas and Silver Stream, are moored in the Old Quay, making it both a practical base and a symbolic home for our work preserving Cornwall’s maritime heritage.

Why the Old Quay Matters to the Trust

The Old Quay is not simply a mooring point. It is:

  • A living reminder of the fishing and trading traditions our boats once served
  • A safe, functional harbour for our sailing programme
  • A community space where heritage, education, and craftsmanship come together

The renovation includes:

  • Final masonry repairs using historically accurate lime mortar
  • Renewal of the Red Lion slip with over 350m² of Cornish granite
  • Restoration of 19th‑century wrought‑iron railings
  • Stabilisation of the quay’s medieval stonework

These improvements directly support the continued operation of historic vessels like ours.

A Shared Vision for a Living Harbour

The restoration aims to create a vibrant, accessible harbour that welcomes traditional boats and community activity. More than a dozen working berths will be available for historic vessels once the project is complete.

The Cornish Maritime Trust is part of the group exploring how the restored quay can best serve:

  • Traditional luggers and working boats
  • Community sailing and training
  • Heritage events and maritime festivals
  • Local artists, schools, and visitors

This aligns perfectly with our mission to keep Cornwall’s maritime heritage active and visible.

Our Role in the Project

The Trust contributes to the Old Quay project by:

  • Providing historic vessels that demonstrate the quay’s original purpose
  • Sharing traditional knowledge with engineers and heritage specialists
  • Supporting community engagement and interpretation
  • Helping shape the future use of the quay as a hub for maritime activity

National Historic Ships UK has also highlighted the importance of this restoration, noting that “Newlyn Old Harbour is the home of Barnabas, one of their 2025 Flagships of the Year.”

A Harbour Ready for the Next Generation

Once complete, the restored Old Quay will become a centre for:

  • Traditional sailing
  • Maritime education
  • Community events
  • Heritage preservation

The Cornish Maritime Trust is proud to support the revival of this historic harbour—ensuring it remains a living, working part of Cornwall’s maritime story.
